Osprey Stratos 34 Review
After years of using a crappy hiking daypack, I finally admitted that if I’m going to keep hiking like this, I want a bloody decent pack.
So the search began. Being frugal like I am, I waited for sales to come on and search and searched for the right bag I wanted. I went to stores to try some on and after all my research, it was evident that it came down to one clear winner – the Osprey Stratos 34.
The key things I was looking for was:
- Good ventilation on back-panel
- Zip opening on top for main compartment (panel-loader)
- A bigger pack than your usual day pack, for long day hiking trips
- Separate pockets for the smaller items like sunglasses and snacks
- Trekking pole attachments
- Drink bottle mesh side pocket
- Good padding on shoulder straps
- And it had to be super comfy!
- A cool colour and look
The Osprey Stratos 34 ticked all of my boxes and I was stoked with the results.
This Osprey Stratos 34 review is about a fantastic, versatile backpack ideal for long day hikes or even a lightweight overnight hiking trip.
It is a panel loader pack, which means it has a big zip on top to the main compartment.
It comes in two sizes, small/medium (SM) and medium/large (ML) and on the new 2017 model, the torso length is now adjustable, where the previous versions did not have this feature.
Compartments & pockets
I like the fact that the Osprey Stratos 34 has loads of pockets so we can keep our things highly organized and easy to get to.
The Osprey Stratos 34 has dual-zippered panel access to the main compartment & sleeping bag compartment which has a bellowed divider.
There is also an internal hydration reservoir sleeve.
On the outside, there are two mesh side pockets for your drink bottles or other stashes, along with two smaller zipped pockets on top for smaller items like map, compass, sunglasses or snacks.
Two zippered hip belt pockets will keep your tiny items handy. It fits my phone, lip balm, snacks/trail mix and a travel tissue packet (handy when hiking with kids).
Another feature I really like is the internal key clip. You can hike all day long without worrying about your keys falling out 5 miles ago!
2017 model – The new and improved 2017 model features a front panel storage pocket and a front panel vertical centre zippered pocket as well, ideal for holding your map.
The older model comes in some cool funky colours: Pine Green (that’s what I’ve got and I love it!) and Solar Flare Orange.
The 2017 model comes in: Beet Red, Black, Eclipse Blue and Gator Green
Other exterior features to note
- Seamless hipbelts
- Integrated rain cover that stows away in its own pocket
- Ice Axe attachment loop
- Stow-on-the-Go Trekking Pole attachments
- Dual side compression straps
- Two extendable straps, ideal for attaching a sleeping mat

ML: 2075 cu in (34 L)

Other backpacks I liked were the Osprey Stratos 36 and the Osprey Tempest 30. The Osprey Tempest 30 is a women-specific design and I was looking for a pack that could ultimately be worn by hubby and a growing teen if the need should ever arise. I also really wanted a backpack that was panel loading so I can zip it right open and get better access to things further down in my pack.
To conclude this Osprey Stratos 34 review, personally, I really like Osprey. I like their designs, the durability, the ventilation and that their packs are super comfy for all day hiking. For more information on specs on their packs visit Osprey. Their website is easy to navigate and jammed pack with information about all their packs and more reviews for you to read.
I hope that you have found some benefit from this Osprey Stratos 34 Review. Feel free to share this with others who are looking for a quality and durable hiking pack for day trips, or even a small overnighter pack.
I am looking at getting the Osprey Ace 50 or Ace 75 for my eldest son soon. It will be the perfect fit for a young teen and will outlast all three kids as they all go through their teens. So check back soon to see which one I decided on and why.
