5 tips for a stress free Christmas – How to plan & budget for a stress free Xmas
Do you dread the onslaught of Christmas? The cost, the madding crowds, the high expectations from little ones at gift time?
Well, you are not alone! Over the last few years, I have tried to get through Christmas with as little effort as possible. Sad, I know. But I always found Christmas to be so stressful. Everything cost so much! And there was always so much to do and organise. When you are not a natural planner like Abby Lawson, this can be tough!
How does having a stress free Christmas sound to you? I’ve put together a little list of a few things that have helped me over recent years breeze through the festive season and have a stress-free Christmas!

1. Start your savings fund for next Christmas yesterday!
Hands up who hasn’t been putting a little bit of money away every week to cover Christmas expenses. This is my top tip to a financially stress free Christmas for the frugal budgeteers!
By putting away just $20 a week into a separate bank account somewhere on Mars means that you will have $1040 to spend towards Christmas the following year. Imagine that – no more stress about how you are going to pay for presents. You’ll be able to go to the grocery store and buy a few extra luxury items and do a really big shop prior to Christmas so you can avoid going to the supermarket at all cost as if it was a plague!
(Obviously, your separate bank account is not on Mars, but it is at a separate bank to where you normally bank. This way you won’t be tempted to spend it during the year – out of sight out of mind! Here’s another tip – it is an account that does not have an ATM or online access! If that’s not enough to stop you from spending it during the year then you seriously need extra guidance!)
2. Write a list of ALL the gifts you are buying
Write out your gift ideas list, have an action plan and stick to it. Don’t get sucked into the whole consumerism trap of “you gotta have this” and “you gotta have that”. Or worse when you are in the shops and you see these really cute things you know your kids will love! No! It wouldn’t be the first time I’m literally running through a shop shielding my eyes muttering “tunnel vision” “tunnel vision” over and over (I have witnesses!).
If it’s not on your list, you don’t need it! Move on. If you dilly-dally about saying “Oh, that’s cute…” then they’ve already got you half way in! This is how you end up overspending at Christmas time! To ensure a financially stress free Christmas – stick to your list!
3. Boycott plastic & cheap
So I mentioned this one in my 7 tips to a frugal Christmas post as well, and I think it fits here too. If you boycott all cheap plastic this Christmas then you won’t be wasting money on needless items, You won’t be wasting your time shopping for it, wrapping it, just to find that it’s broken the very next day after Xmas and the kid has completely forgotten about it anyway. And the point was?
Instead, spend your time and effort on something that will last. A memory, an experience. Or a handmade or handcrafted item for them to treasure for eternity. Amazon has loads of books available for handcrafted and handmade gifts that you can make at home. These can be super easy gifts and yet be valued so much more!
4. Find ways to relieve your stress
For me, its a glass of wine and a few drops of essential oils in my Aria Diffuser or in a hot bath. I recommend you have a good supply of essential oils such as Lavender to help you relax and unwind after a hectic day driving around the shopping mall car park and accomplishing your Christmas shopping. Here’s to a stress free Christmas! Ching Ching!
5. Or you could avoid the crowds altogether and shop online!
Yes Yes Yes! I love online shopping! It is such a better way to shop and let’s face it – it is the way of the future! It is more relaxing, as I can do it from the comfort of my own home. It is way less stressful as I don’t have to drive around full carparks all day long. In fact, I don’t have to drive at all and therefore am saving money on fuel! Win-win!
As you probably already know, Amazon has everything you need for a stress free Christmas shopping experience! Shop while you’re at work, shop on your lunch break or at home in your PJ’s. Doesn’t matter where you are. The click of a few buttons and all your Christmas shopping could be winging it’s way to you in a matter of hours!
The only downside that I can possibly think of is the timing of the boxes when the courier delivers them to home and the kids might be home:) But hey, I’ll take that chance any day!

There have been times when I have several bits of paper floating around my house. To-do lists, Shopping lists, Calendars, you know how it goes! I was all over the place to say the least!
